The new 400 Thunder Sportsman Championship season kicks off at Springmount Raceway near Cairns in North Queensland this weekend with a record entry list set to contest the opening round. Adding to the excitement is the inclusion of the Aeroflow Outlaw Nitro Funny Cars with ten of the spectacular flame breathing monsters on hand to thrill the fans.

The event gives local and interstate competitors an opportunity to race for the coveted gold and silver Christmas Tree trophies which are only available at 400 Thunder Sportsman rounds. As the event this weekend is part of the 400 Thunder Sportsman series and classed as an ‘interstate’ round it has attracted competitors from VIC , NSW and QLD who will score a 50%  points bonus.

Springmount Raceway Management have been delighted with the response from Sportsman competitors. Springmount Managing Director, Evan Yelavich , commented, “We’ve seen an increase in overall entry numbers from last year, but the real difference is in the number of entries in more competition-style categories as opposed to street brackets.  There is a  noticeable increase in competitors travelling from the south, plus the fact that we are seeing more locals stepping up from street cars to dedicated race cars.”

There has been strong growth in Top Sportsman with fifteen entrants up from eight last year. Modified has doubled from six to twelve and Junior Dragster has grown from thirteen to twenty-two which is a great sign for the future of the sport.

400 Thunder General Manager Steve Bettes took todays opportunity to say “congratulate to all the competitors for making this first round of the 400 Thunder Sportsman Series for the 2019-20 season and in particular the interstate competitors who have made the long haul to Springmount Raceway  for this weekend”.

Food, bar and camping available at the racetrack. There is a test session on Friday night (August 23) with the full event on Saturday August 24.
